Reasons why intermodal transport should be chosen over road transport

There are many who are still wondering about the advantages of intermodal transport and to put us in situation it is necessary to talk about the Paris Agreement of November 4, 2016.

Transport intermodality

This historic agreement was signed at the United Nations headquarters on April 22, 2016 by all the countries of the world and whose main purpose is to curb global warming.

To achieve this purpose, the proposal is that CO2 emissions begin to take a downward curve as soon as possible.

Every five years, countries submit their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which include the measures that each state will implement to reduce emissions in the coming years and which must be increasingly ambitious.

It is estimated that road transport is responsible for 27% of CO2 emissions. The replacement of road transport by intermodal transport is a great step forward in reducing emissions, but there are other reasons that should encourage industries to use intermodal transport:

  1. Less CO2 emissions is equivalent to a reduction of the carbon footprint
For every 1,000 kms we manage to do by train instead of truck, we will reduce the emissions we emit to the atmosphere between 750 kgs - 820 kgs of CO2, depending on consumptions, weights, type of truck, etc. This is undoubtedly a major step forward in making intermodal transport containers much more sustainable. This reduction is aligned with the political strategy of the European Union.
  2. We will remove trucks from the road
As we can see, traffic jams on the roads are becoming more and more frequent, especially around large urban centers. One of the culprits is the large number of vehicles on Europe's roads, especially heavy vehicles. By choosing Intermodal Transport, we will be able to remove trucks from the road and reduce these traffic jams.
  3. We will help the family reconciliation
The work of the truck driver for International Transport companies is a hard job, which forces truck drivers to spend many days away from home. For this reason, there are fewer and fewer professional drivers. If we change the traditional road transport for Intermodal Transport, drivers could have a normal working day near their home, allowing them to go almost every day to sleep and be with their family, having to make shorter journeys, only to carry and pick up the semi-trailers, swap bodies and containers from the railroad or ship.
  4. Less damage to infrastructures
The elimination of trucks on the road, will cause less damage to highways and national roads with the consequent reduction also in the cost of maintenance of the same. Something that, in short, all taxpayers gain.
  5. The goods travel safer
The goods go from the customer's factory to the train station and from the destination train station to the destination factory. The driver will not be forced to sleep in the truck with the goods, there are no guarded parking lots on all routes, which avoids the thefts that sadly often occur on European routes during the night.

Is there or is there not a reason to switch to intermodal transport? Sacytrans is ALREADY doing it! We are happy to help you with this combined transport to realize your desired routes in Europe.
