Sacytrans advances in its Sustainable Commitment: Carbon Footprint Register and Climate Action Plan
In a continuing effort towards its commitment to environmental sustainability, Sacytrans, an international transport company, is pleased to announce an important milestone reached on 17 November.
Sustainable Highlights: Registration with the Ministry of Ecological Transition
After an arduous process, the company has submitted all required documentation to register its carbon footprint with the Ministry of Ecological Transition (MITECO). This achievement represents a significant step in implementing responsible strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reflects Sacytrans's firm commitment to caring for the environment.
Sacytrans has consolidated a critical step forward in its quest for environmental sustainability in the international transport and logistics sector by submitting the necessary documentation for registering its carbon footprint with the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
Strategies and Targets: Defined Actions for Carbon Footprint Reduction in intermodal transport.
This registration involves presenting specific criteria for verifying the carbon footprint carried out by an independent entity. In this sense, Sacytrans has collaborated with the company ADOS Sostenibilidad y Clima, in association with Bidasoa Activa, within its agreement with the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. This collaboration is part of actions aimed at promoting regional planning and action on energy sustainability and the fight against climate change for the year 2050, following the guidelines of Gipuzkoa Klima 2050 and the Gipuzkoa Energy Sustainability Strategy 2050.
The "Carbon Footprint" measurement represents an environmental indicator that seeks to reflect the total emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), either directly or indirectly, by individuals, organizations, companies, events, products, or services. This measurement is expressed in mass of CO2 equivalent and includes the six GHGs recognized in the Kyoto Protocol: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Although unified under a single unit of measurement (mass of CO2 equivalent), it represents the sum of all GHGs considered.
Sacytrans's carbon footprint calculation has been carried out under the international standard UNE-EN ISO 14064:2012, covering four phases. Firstly, data was collected for the years analyzed (2021 and 2022). Subsequently, these data were analyzed using the MITECO Organisational Carbon Footprint Calculator. The results obtained allowed the identification of priority areas for action. Finally, a short- and medium-term improvement plan was drawn up.
Once the footprint had been calculated, a series of actions were designed to pursue three fundamental objectives.
- Firstly, nine actions related to energy, transport, and procurement policies have been established to reduce the carbon footprint.
- Secondly, six actions have been agreed upon to foster a sustainable commitment at all levels of the organization, focusing on management and sustainability.
- Finally, with the third objective of mitigating the risks of climate change in Sacytrans, it is proposed to develop a protocol that adapts the company's various workplaces to climatic adversities.
The improvement plan details the actions to be undertaken, assigning specific people in charge and establishing dates for their implementation.
In a context where sustainability and efficiency are fundamental pillars, at Sacytrans, we reaffirm our commitment to intermodal transport and its vital role in reducing emissions and preserving the environment. We will continue to lead the way in combined transport, adopting sustainable practices and actively promoting innovative intermodal solutions in all our international transport cases. Our focus on sustainability is a commitment and our responsibility to the future. At Sacytrans, we work tirelessly to ensure that every step we take in the intermodal arena is aligned with preserving the environment and creating a more sustainable future.
